Rohit Sharma narrowly missed out on becoming the first Indian batsman to score three away tons in a series when he was dismissed for 99 off 108 balls in the fifth One-Day International (ODI) between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Rohit was playing the anchor’s role after a Shikhar Dhawan blitz at the start helped India get off to a superb start. Though Dhawan and Virat Kohli fell in quick succession, Rohit and the inexperienced Manish Pandey steadied the ship with a calm and composed 97-run partnership. Rohit and Dhawan exchanged roles from the last game, with Dhawan being the early aggressor and Rohit batting through. Dhawan was absolutely brutal in his innings, hitting seven fours and three sixes in his 56-ball 78. They added a rapid 123 for the opening stand before Dhawan fell to an excellent catch from Shaun Marsh off the bowling from John Hastings. Kohli soon edged Hastings behind to Matthew Wade to be dismissed for 8 off 11 balls, his first non-fifty-plus score this year. Live Cricket Blog: India vs Australia 2015-16, 5th ODI at Sydney
Rohit and Pandey then put on a crucial 97 runs, in which Pandey was the aggressor. Rohit went about his job in his usual stylish manner. He ended up scoring an excellent 99, though he was dropped on 93. It did not matter though, as he ended up edging one to the wicketkeeper one run short of what would have been his third century of the series.
