2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Highlights
For 2016, the updated GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in regular cab, extended cab (Double Cab), and crew cab styles paired with 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive and a short, standard, or long cargo box.
Buyers can choose base, SLE, SLT, or luxurious Denali trim, and depending on the model, GMC offers All-Terrain and Elevation Edition appearance and equipment packages. We discuss the Sierra Denali in a separate report.
This year’s new Elevation Edition is offered for the base-trim Double Cab model, giving the affordable model a more aggressive look combined with popular equipment. Black 20-inch aluminum wheels, LED fog lights, and LED cargo box lighting accentuate the truck’s body-color trim, and the Elevation Edition includes an automatic locking differential, heated power side mirrors, and a remote locking tailgate. This version of the Sierra also comes with an IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch display screen and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration technologies. OnStar subscription services, complete with a 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, are also standard for this model.
If you’re planning to go off-road, get the SLE or SLT in Double Cab or Crew Cab style, and equip it with the All-Terrain option package. This upgrade installs unique 18-inch aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires, a Z71 off-road suspension, a transfer case skid plate, Hill Descent Control, and front tow hooks. Special interior and exterior detailing, a spray-on bedliner, and rear parking assist sensors are also standard for the Sierra All-Terrain.
For the Sierra, GMC employs a family of direct-injected engine equipped with cylinder deactivation technology that is designed to help conserve fuel. The 4.3-liter V6 engine makes 285 horsepower, the 5.3-liter V8 engine generates 355 horsepower, and the optional 6.2-liter V8 is good for 420 horsepower. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard for the V6 and 5.3-liter V8, while an 8-speed automatic is optional with the 5.3-liter V8 and standard for the 6.2-liter V8.
Depending on how the truck is configured, the Sierra 1500 can tow up to 12,000 pounds and handle a payload measuring as much as 2,260 lbs.
